A Custom Fireplace Transformation in Summit County
Great carpentry is often the difference between a room that looks fine and a room that feels truly unique. This featured project is a perfect example. We took a dated, oversized stone fireplace and rebuilt it into a clean, modern focal point, using hand-built woodwork and a few clever details that you'd never guess were there. It's the kind of work that defines what we do as a carpenter in Summit County, Colorado.
Where the Fireplace Started
The original fireplace was a floor-to-ceiling river rock surround with a traditional wood-burning insert and flanking built-in shelves. It was solidly built, but it was heavy, bulky, and very much of its era. It dominated the room and worked against the home's tall, light-filled ceilings rather than complementing them. The homeowners wanted something that felt modern and warm without losing the mountain character that drew them to the house in the first place.
A Cleaner, Modern Rebuild
We re-imagined the fireplace around a horizontal, linear gas insert and refaced the surround in light stacked stone that carries all the way up the vaulted wall. The change in scale and color instantly brightened the room and let the space breathe. Where the old design felt bulky, the new one feels intentional and calm, a modern mountain look that still belongs in a Colorado home.
The mantel is where the carpentry starts to shine. We sourced a reclaimed beam locally and set it as a single, substantial mantel across the face of the fireplace. Reclaimed wood is something we return to again and again, because it carries a depth of grain and history that new lumber simply can't fake, and sourcing it close to home keeps that character rooted in the region.
The Hidden Detail: Stacked-Log Storage Doors
The feature we're proudest of is the one most people never notice. The two panels of neatly stacked log rounds on either side of the firebox look like a decorative nod to a woodpile. In reality, they're custom doors. We built each panel as a stacked-log round door that swings open to reveal hidden storage tucked into the wall.
Details like this are what carpentry is really about. It would have been far simpler to face those openings with more stone and call it done. Instead, we built something that's both beautiful and genuinely useful, and we hid the function so completely that the panels read as pure design. That blend of craftsmanship and problem-solving is exactly what a good carpenter should bring to a project.
